The Makino Herbarium contains following specimens:

1. The Makino's Collection consists of Algae (Marine Algae and Charophytes), Leichen, Bryophytes, Pteridophytes, Gymnosperms, and Angiosperms. The collection includes not only those collected by Dr. Makino himself since 1881 through 1950, but also the specimens sent to him for identification and / or as gifts.

2. The specimens from other herbaria for exchange with MAK.

3. The specimens collected by some special projects to which our staffs and their collaborators have joined, such as the Bonin (Ogasawara) Islands, the Sino-Himalayan Region, central Asia, South America (the Andean Region) etc.

4. The Bryophyte specimens collected and donated by the late Dr. Kyuichi Sakurai including a number of type specimens.

5. The marine algae collected by the late Dr. Michitaro Higashi.

6. The P. F. Siebold's (1796-1866) Collection donated from Komarov Botanical Institute.

7. The other collections as gift of such botanists as: Dr. Syuzo Ito (specimens of the Galapagos Islands), Mr. Kinzi Ito (specimens of the Mts. Sobo, Kyushu), Dr. Kozo Imahori (specimens of Charophyceae), etc.
