Type Specimen Catalog of the Makino Herbarium

The Makino Herbarium is in the process of cataloging its vascular plant specimens. "Type Specimen Catalog of the Makino Herbarium" is first computerized catalogue of the vascular plant type specimens. The catalog includes approximately 740 vascular plant type specimens in the Makino Herbarium. For these specimens, data are accompanied by digital images of the specimen.

Types include the following (Greuter et al. 1994):
Holotype: Specimen or illustration used and/or designated by the author as the nomenclatural type.
Isotype: Specimen duplicate of the holotype.
Lectotype: Specimen or illustration designated as the nomenclatural type when no holotype was indicated at the time of publication, when the holotype is found to belong to more than one taxon, or as long as it is missing.
Neotype: Specimen or illustration selected to serve as nomenclatural type as long as all of the material on which the name of the taxon was based is missing.
Paratype: Specimen cited in the protologue that is neither the holotype nor an isotype, nor one of the syntype if two or more specimens were simultaneously designated as types.
Syntype: Any one of two or more specimens cited in the original description.
Topotype: Specimen collected at the same locality as the holotype or lectotype.

In the catalog, there are a number of presumed subspecies, variety or form rank, for which the place of publication could not be ascertained. Also, there are some taxa for which the literture could not be obtained to verify their status at the present time. It is hoped that the status of these collections can be verified.
